In an early-stage startup, you’ll be selling why your idea matters to early customers and potential partners.

This is exactly what you should include in your pitch to these groups.


The List of How to Pitch and Sell:


It doesn’t matter if you are writing an email, creating a slide show or performing an elevator pitch in person…



BE BRIEF!


This is so important.

People are busy, and if you include too much information, they’ll assume you don’t value their precious time — and they’ll think you don’t know how the world works.

✅ In your email or slides, take out HALF of the text you’ve written. Just make sure it still tells the story we are telling, below…

STATE THE PROBLEM


Briefly state what the problem is, quickly.

✅ If you are pitching investors: state what the problem is that you have uncovered.


✅ If you are pitching to make a sale: explain how the buyer’s way of life is about to change. This will set you up for the next part.

EXPLAIN WHO YOU ARE


Explain why you are the right fit to solve this problem.


✅ BRIEFLY! This is NOT the place to tell your life’s story.

DESCRIBE YOUR SOLUTION


In one sentence, or two, discuss what you are working on.


✅ Again, do NOT go into great detail.

I know it’s tempting to talk about that past, your failed attempts, what led you to this point etc. This is not the time for it.

MAKE IT MEMORABLE


Again, people are busy. They are consumed with their own life.


✅ Hit them with a memorable stat or something that they will carry with them. Make them ponder one key thing, so it won’t leave their brain.
This will help them remember you.


⭐⭐⭐ SHOW TRACTION!! ⭐⭐⭐


There are too many ‘wantrepreneurs’ and dreamers out there.

Important people can quickly sniff out who is serious and who is not.

✅ Show that you have traction. This shows determination and hustle.

If you can accomplish something great with very little resources…

They can imagine what you can do with much more.


The ‘ASK’


The whole point of a pitch, in most cases, is to get a meeting.


✅ No one lands investment money with a cold email.

No one makes a sale from a 30 second elevator pitch.

The goal is to make them curious and interested, so you can grab more time with them to dive in deeper.

If you have 30 seconds with someone….


🚫The wrong way to pitch:

“Hey, I’m Aron. So. I grew up in the Midwest and used to collect baseball cards when I was a kid. My dad and I loved to go to MLB games and open packs of cards and put together complete sets. Looking back on that experience got me thinking about the collectibles market….” 💤😴💤



❌ Skip all of this.

Stories have their place, but this isn’t that place.

You have 30 seconds (the average elevator ride) to sell someone on your idea or product.


That’s why it’s called an elevator pitch.


You don’t have time for background.



Let’s try again:



👍 Collectibles are a $4billion dollar a year business, but only the wealthy are making any serious money. We came up with a way for anyone to participate in the upper end of this market, democratizing it. I used to be a director at an auction house, and we already have 1000 people on our waitlist for when we launch… ☕️ ☀️ ☕️
