🚫 The Wrong Way to Network

There’s an old-school way of thinking that goes like this:

You go to a local meetup or event, with the purpose of networking. Perhaps you have a startup or a business and you’re looking for connections.

The OLD WAY maximized ‘touches’ over quality relationships. In fact, something that happened to me at a networking event prompted this post…

📚 Super-Quick Story

A few years ago, I was at a startup event in Southern California. It was a pretty large event, 500-1000 people, so it was a bit of madness there.

I was casually talking with a guy for no more than a minute and he said:

“Here’s my card. I have to get my 50+ touches in…”

And he walked off. 😂

😲 And you’ll never guess who that guy was.
DO YOU KNOW WHO HE WAS?

No?

🤷‍♂️ Me neither! I threw his card into my backpack and never talked to him again.

I have no clue what business he was in or what he might need. I have no idea what his name was.

🦉 The best piece of advice I can give you…

1️⃣ Go to small, local networking events around a shared interest (startups, video games, poker… it doesn’t matter).

2️⃣ Aim to MAKE FRIENDS. Don’t optimize for HOW MANY people you reach, optimize for making close friends with 1 or 2 people.

3️⃣ Why? Friends recommend each other — casual acquaintances do not. You won’t make any meaningful connections if you pass out business cards in bulk.

💡 Let me tell you about the common sense behind why this approach works:

🧩 Why This Solves What You Need

In any local area (your town, city) there are a given number of people that are really well connected. It seems impossible to meet all of them, and you’re probably right.

❗❗ You don’t have to go out there and meet EVERY impactful person in your area.

💡 You just have to meet the few people that KNOW all of the impactful people. It’s so much easier!

At the end of the day, you want to have ACCESS to the people that matter. That’s what you’re shooting for. Friends make introductions — random acquaintances don’t.

With every friend you make, the odds increase that you are getting closer to the people with the highest influence in your area.

You don’t have to try to meet the influential people yourself — they aren’t at the networking events. But the people that know them, are!

✅ And, above all, show up at these events with a mindset to HELP… not to RECEIVE. If you listen more than you talk, you’ll make friends.

Don’t be this nutjob 😅

🌎 Let’s Hear What Others Say About Networking

"The currency of real networking is not greed but generosity."

Keith Ferrazzi, author of Never Eat Alone

“Networking is a lot like nutrition and fitness: we know what to do, the hard part is making it a top priority.”

Herminia Ibarra, professor at INSEAD
