🤷‍♀️ Why Does Polling Matter?

Engaging directly with your prospective customers through polls or surveys offers invaluable insights that you otherwise wouldn’t know. You’ll learn about problems, solutions, expectations and more.

👉 Polling your target market also prevents you from building something that may have no demand at all.

Example Scenario

Meet Beth, a startup founder creating an app that helps young adults manage finances. Beth wants to ensure her app meets the needs of her target audience before investing in further development.

1️⃣ Finding People to Poll

Beth starts by joining social media groups focused on personal finance, reaching out to people on /r/personalfinance on Reddit.

✔ Quora is also a good place to look for people because there are active discussions there, usually around problems. Also check Facebook Groups for people that are interested in your topic — as well as hunting for people one at a time via LinkedIn.

✔ Networking Events or Meetups can also be a treasure trove and also consider Newsletters that are focused on the industry you are looking to enter.

⭐ TIP!

Perhaps the newsletter operator will let you talk to a few readers — maybe in exchange for early testing of your product. Some might mention your startup in their newsletter — newsletters want to know about new developments in their market!

2️⃣ Questions Beth Might Want to Ask

What’s your biggest struggle with budgeting?
This helps you build from a problem that you know needs solved.

How do you currently track your spending?
This helps you learn about what exists today and where it might fall short.

What would make a budgeting app useful for you?
Notice the open-ended question here… have the customer tell you what they need… let them talk!

3️⃣ Insights Beth Wants to Gather

Beth hopes to learn which budgeting challenges her target audience faces and the features they value. She’s also looking to confirm what product they currently use and what device they prefer to have their budgeting tools on.

🚫 Customer Polling Mistakes to AVOID!

1️⃣ DON’T: Ask Leading Questions:

Avoid asking questions like, “Wouldn’t it be great if someone made X”? You don’t want to lead them to your solution - you want to gather intel!

2️⃣ DON’T: Rely on Too Small a Sample:

You don’t want to talk to just a few people and assume you have all you need. Talk to a good sample size to make sure insights are consistent.

3️⃣ DON’T: Ignore ‘Outlier’ Feedback:

Don’t disregard unique answers. You might gather good insight from those answers that seem a bit off the wall. 😜
