Ok here we go…

🤷‍♂️ How people come up with great startup ideas

Most successful people start with a problem they have observed or faced themselves.

The reason this usually works is:

✔ If you are facing a problem that no one has solved, others are likely facing the same problem.

✔ As odd as it sounds, if you work on a personal problem — you know for sure that this problem exists and it’s not something you’re just dreaming up.

✔ Nothing motivates a person like solving something they are passionate about.

✔ Creating a startup because you want wealth, or you hate your job, usually isn’t something that keeps you motivated through the tough product-market-fit days.

🙈 The wrong way most people do it

“I need a good idea”!

Have you said that?

Yeah. Me too.

Coming up with a random idea to pursue is dangerous because:

✔ You have no clue if this is actually solving anything.

✔ You’ve started your whole venture based on assumptions instead of needs / desires and validation that there is a market for this.

✔ You’ll likely build something that no one wants, and then it’s too late to back track because you’ve spent a ton of time and resources.

✔ Usually, you present your random idea to friends and family who think it’s a cool idea — but this isn’t the feedback you need. You need feedback from potential paying customers.

The main reason startups fail is because they create something that no one wants. When you start from a random idea instead of a common problem, you increase your chances that this venture may fail based on ‘no need’.

🦉 Your plan of action for today

1️⃣ List 3 problems that you constantly deal with that drive you crazy.

2️⃣ List the companies (if any) that are in the market, solving these problems for you.

3️⃣ Write down why these companies are NOT solving the problem correctly — what is missing from their offering?

4️⃣ Write down what you feel would be the ideal solution to the problem.

5️⃣ Find 5 people in this market as well… online is fine… ask them if they have the same problem and what they have done to remedy it.

Do you see a strong need for this to be solved? Good, you’re ready for the next steps of idea validation.

🌎 Let’s hear what others say about startup ideas

"The very best startup ideas tend to have three things in common: they're something the founders themselves want, that they themselves can build, and that few others realize are worth doing."

Paul Graham, co-founder of Y Combinator

“No business plan survives first contact with customers. So, the goal is to get out of the building and start learning.”

Steve Blank
